These stated stakeholder and actors have a great role and interest in ESA's objective and missions, as stated in its mandate and duty, on Counsel of Minister Regulation No. 193/2010. How ESA helps in asserting its main stake holder are summarized as follow
As the Ethiopian National Standards Body (NSB), ESA works closely with government to represent the interests and needs of the Ethiopia in its formal standardization activity. Besides, ESA involves a wide number of Ethiopian government departments and agencies in the processes of standardization. They participate in technical committees along with representatives from business, academia and consumer groups to make sure that products, processes, new technologies and services incorporate the knowledge and needs of all interested parties.
ESA also works directly with specific government departments to provide informal or private standards - customized, quick solutions that address a particular issue or need.
ESA works with a wide range of Ethiopian and international organizations how standards can benefit your business. ESA offers a wide range of products and services standards to the business communities.
We involve individual Ethiopian businesses and trade associations in the production of formal Ethiopian and international standards to ensure that relevant products, processes, new technologies and services take full account of technical and commercial needs, cut red tape and reduce barriers to trade.
ESA provides specific support to small and medium sized enterprises (SME's) for need to make the best possible use of and contribution to, the standardization process.
SME's can achieve real benefits from standards. Used to best advantage, standards can:
- eliminate inefficiencies in resource allocation
- improve speed to market and reduce risk
- Enable effective competition with larger organizations.
We help businesses and trade associations in the production of commissioned standards - fast to market solutions that can either be privately commissioned or made available as public specifications.
Consumer representation in standards
All standards affect the public directly or indirectly, even though most are produced to serve the immediate needs of business and industry. Many, though, have a direct and beneficial impact on the general public. These include ‘traditional' consumer related standards such as those for domestic appliances, or signs and symbols, as well as those newer types of standard for sustainability, social responsibility or services.
ESA is committed to trying to ensure that representation on its technical committees and access to the standards-making process is as wide as possible and maintains a Consumer and Public Interest, responsible for coordinating the participation of those stakeholders who would not otherwise normally be involved at a day-to-day level, e.g. consumers and individual specialists in subjects such as child safety or ergonomics.
The objective is to influence the content of standards to reflect the needs and proper expectations of the general public with regard to factors such safety and security, labeling, accessibility, fairness and redress.
Very many subjects are covered by the Consumer association, but current priorities are in the areas of sustainability, security, accessibility, and the new and expanding field of services standardization. We also continue to cover important ongoing work on product safety, child safety and symbols, where our expertise and contribution are crucial.
